THE LEGEND
Before he had a name anyone remembered, he had a god he prayed to every day of a childhood spent starving under a black sky that never once brought rain. His world had no sun, no crops, and no mercy, and its people worshipped anyway, certain that faith alone would be answered. It never was. He watched his mother die praying. He watched his son die in his arms, still praying, and something in him that had held out hope for a lifetime simply stopped.
Then he saw two gods fight over his dying world as if it were nothing, and one of them fell. From the wreck of that god's corpse rose a blade of living shadow that whispered a single promise: it would let him make every god answer for the silence. He took the name Gorr and set out across the stars with All-Black the Necrosword in hand, tearing through pantheon after pantheon, certain that a universe without gods would finally be a universe without liars.
OFF THE PAGE
Gorr first stalked out of the pages of Thor: God of Thunder #1 in 2012, the creation of writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribic, who built him as the argument atheism could make against Thor's entire pantheon: a grieving nihilist convinced that if gods really cared, the universe would look nothing like it does. The God Butcher storyline became one of the defining runs in the character's history, splitting Thor across three timelines just to survive him.
A decade later, Christian Bale brought Gorr to the screen in Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), trading the comic's cosmic body horror for a gaunt, unsettling stage presence that stole the film out from under its own hero. Bale has called playing a villain like Gorr "the easiest job," joking that the character's prosthetic nails threw him off between takes more than the performance itself did, since he could barely eat or type while wearing them. Gorr's design, half starved and grey beneath the Necrosword's shadow, became one of the MCU's most striking villain silhouettes almost overnight.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Sixth scale collectors got one clean shot at Gorr, and Hot Toys made it count. Their 2024 Hot Toys release leaned hard into the character's alien wrongness: sunken sculpt, mottled grey skin, and a sculpted All-Black the Necrosword trailing shadow-effect parts that make the whole figure look like it is actively decaying the shelf around it.
It is not a crowded line to collect, not yet. Hot Toys has been the only maker to take him on so far, a villain most Marvel collectors did not see coming until Love and Thunder made him the best part of the movie it was supposed to be a footnote in. If Gorr belongs on your shelf, there is a way in, and it does the character justice.
