This is the day you will always remember as the day you almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow.
THE LEGEND
Captain Jack Sparrow (the "captain" is non-negotiable, even when the ship is elsewhere) is a pirate lord of the Brethren Court, master of the Black Pearl, and owner of a compass that points not north but at whatever its holder wants most. His, famously, spins. He has escaped cannibals, the gallows, the Kraken's belly and Davy Jones's locker, mostly by talking, occasionally by running in a manner best described as interpretive.
Every scheme looks like drunken improvisation until the last piece lands and you realize he planned it, or possibly didn't, which is somehow worse for his enemies. Dishonest, as he says, is the one thing you can trust him to be. Savvy?
OFF THE PAGE
Johnny Depp built the performance from Keith Richards and a cartoon skunk, the studio reportedly panicked, and the result earned an Oscar nomination and carried five films, the only theme-park-ride adaptation in history to mint an all-time character. Every line reading became quotable; the run-on escapes became a genre of their own.
Sparrow single-handedly revived the pirate movie, a genre Hollywood had declared dead for decades, and the swaying, bead-braided silhouette is now what the entire culture pictures when someone says "pirate."
IN SIXTH SCALE
Sparrow is one of the richest softgoods-and-sculpt packages in the hobby: the layered coat, the sash, the braided beard and trinket-laden dreadlocks, plus the compass, dual flintlocks and a jar of dirt for the devoted. Hot Toys has issued him across the Pirates of the Caribbean films, including deluxe versions that go deep on the clutter.
