THE LEGEND
A dying world folded its last hope into a rocket, and a childless couple in a Kansas wheat field unfolded it. That is the whole trick of him, and it has never stopped working: the most powerful being on the planet was raised by the gentlest people on it, and the farm won.
He can move mountains, outrace light and hear a heartbeat across a city, but his defining power is restraint: strength that chooses, every single second, to be careful. Clark Kent is not the disguise; the glasses hide nothing that matters. He is what the boy from Krypton decided to be, and the cape is just what decency looks like at altitude. In a genre built on power fantasies, he remains the stranger one: a fantasy about goodness that never blinks.
OFF THE PAGE
Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two sons of immigrants from Cleveland, invented the entire superhero genre in Action Comics #1 in 1938: the costume, the secret identity, the impossible strength, all of it starts here. Every character in every archive downstream of that cover owes him rent.
Christopher Reeve made the world believe a man could fly in 1978 and set a warmth standard no blockbuster has quite matched; Cavill gave him gravitas for a darker decade; each new era relitigates whether goodness is still interesting and concludes, eventually, that it is. Eight decades on, the S remains the most recognised symbol in fiction, and the argument about how to write a good man is still the genre's hardest and most rewarding.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Superman's sixth-scale history is quieter than his cowled colleague's, which makes the great ones count double: a Superman figure stands or falls on presence, that impossible mix of power and kindness in a sculpted face. Hot Toys and a spread of makers across the DC shelf have chased Reeve's warmth, Cavill's weight and the comic-classic reds and blues in between.
