THE LEGEND
She is a Type 40 TT capsule, grown rather than built, and she is the last of her kind in flight. Officially she was stolen from a repair bay on Gallifrey by a renegade Time Lord. Her own account differs: she left the doors unlocked because she wanted to see the universe, and she stole a Time Lord to do it. Her chameleon circuit, designed to disguise her anywhere in space and time, examined London in 1963, chose the shape of a police telephone box, and has never willingly chosen anything else.
She is dimensionally transcendental, which is the engineering term for the sentence everyone says on first entry. She translates every language in creation for her passengers, she is jealous of strangers, and she is armed with almost nothing except the ability to be elsewhere. Her navigation is famously debatable and her timing famously perfect: she does not go where she is asked, she goes where she is needed. The wheeze of her engines is the sound of hope arriving, anywhere, anywhen.

The TARDIS exists because a 1963 BBC budget could not afford a new exterior every week: a police box was a shape London already trusted, and the broken chameleon circuit was invented to explain why it never changed. The joke outlived its origin spectacularly. Real police boxes vanished from British streets, and the TARDIS kept the silhouette alive so thoroughly that the BBC eventually won the trademark to it. A prop built from thrift now owns the shape it borrowed.
Her voice is thrift too: the engine wheeze was created by scraping house keys along piano strings at the Radiophonic Workshop. Sixty years of redesigns have adjusted her windows and her blue, and Neil Gaiman's The Doctor's Wife finally let her speak, confirming what the audience always suspected: she is not a vehicle in the story. She is the longest relationship in it.
IN SIXTH SCALE
At sixth scale the TARDIS is less a figure than an address: the box every Doctor Who display is secretly arranged around. Big Chief Studios built her alongside its Doctors in the licence's first sixth-scale era, and with the mantle passed to Master Replicas, the police box remains the franchise's essential set piece: a prop, a backdrop and a character in one blue rectangle.
She also holds a singular distinction in this Archive: the top of the VEHICLE ladder. The scouting report below is the calibration ceiling every other machine is measured against, and her FIREPOWER stat is a single digit, because the greatest vehicle in fiction barely carries a weapon. She never needed one. She has doors, and all of time to close them in.
