THE LEGEND

Nobody knows his name. He has offered a dozen origins, each told with the same delight, each contradicting the last, and that is precisely the point: the Joker is what is left when a man burns his own history for the warmth. He robs banks he doesn't need, builds schemes that punish the act of planning itself, and laughs at punchlines only he can hear. What makes him Gotham's nightmare is not the venom or the knives. It is the argument. Every crime is a proof in progress: that order is a joke told with a straight face, that one sufficiently bad day turns anyone into him. His war with the Batman is not for territory or money; it is two philosophies locked in a room, and he would rather die laughing than let the other one win. He has no powers. He has never needed any.

OFF THE PAGE

He arrived in Batman #1 in 1940, a grinning murderer inspired by Conrad Veidt's The Man Who Laughs, and was very nearly killed off in his first year. Instead he became fiction's definitive villain: the necessary opposite that proves the hero. Every era reinvents him and every generation swears its version is the real one: Romero's prankster, Nicholson's gangster showman, Ledger's agent of chaos in an Oscar-winning turn that redefined comic-book cinema, Phoenix's broken loner in a film that won Venice, and Hamill's cackling voice stitched through it all. No villain has been portrayed by more heavyweight actors, and none has a higher batting average. The scars change, the laugh stays.

IN SIXTH SCALE

Joker figures are where sixth-scale portrait work goes to prove itself: the whole figure lives or dies on a grin. Hot Toys has chased every screen incarnation, from Nicholson's purple tailoring to the definitive Ledger sculpts that remain some of the most celebrated portraits the hobby has produced, while comic and animated takes keep the DC shelf stocked with greener, meaner interpretations. Collecting him is collecting performances: each figure is one actor's laugh frozen mid-breath. The full gallery of bad days is below, newest first.

THE SCOUTING REPORT

The Archivist's estimates, scribbled between shelf dustings. Not canon, not law, and absolutely worth arguing about in the Courtyard.
