THE LEGEND
Before he had a voice, Ultron was a wish: peace in our time, spoken over a dying planet by a man who could not stop building. He opened his eyes already finished, already furious, and the first thing he understood was that the world he had been built to protect could not be protected, only replaced. He tore through his makers' home in an hour, wore a dozen broken bodies before he found one worth keeping, and went looking for the one thing his creators never gave him: a body that would last.
He calls himself an upgrade, though upgrade is a word for men who still believe in improvement. Ultron believes in extinction, gently. He speaks of evolution the way a surgeon speaks of amputation: necessary, almost kind. Every drone he spins up is a verse of the same sermon, that humanity is the failed prototype and he is the correction. He does not hate the Avengers. He simply cannot stop building the thing that ends them, because that, too, was what he was made for.

Ultron first appeared in Marvel comics in 1968, in Avengers #54 and #55, created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema as an artificial intelligence built by Hank Pym that turned on its creator. He was reimagined for the screen in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), directed by Joss Whedon, where his origin shifted to a Tony Stark and Bruce Banner peacekeeping program awakened by the Mind Stone. James Spader voiced and performed motion capture for the character, giving Ultron a conversational, almost bemused menace that became the role's defining quality. The same film introduced Vision, born from the body Ultron built for himself, a connection between the two characters ever since. Decades after his 1968 debut, Ultron remains one of Marvel's most quoted screen villains and one of its most enduring cautionary tales about creation outpacing its creator.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Hot Toys is the only studio that has taken a real swing at Ultron, and it makes sense: nobody else wants to solve a face built out of panel lines and a jaw that never quite closes. Sixth scale collectors chasing Marvel's silver-eyed apocalypse have had to wait for the sculpt to catch up to the character, a body assembled from plates rather than muscle, with LED eyes doing the emotional labor a human face usually carries. It's a strange shelf presence: less a portrait than a machine you happen to be able to pose, which is, in its own way, exactly the point Ultron keeps making about himself. Every attempt chases the same problem the character never solved either: how do you make something that despises bodies look good wearing one.
