Ultron built himself a son and meant him for a weapon. Into the casting went a body of synthetic flesh, a mind patterned on the brainwaves of a good man, and a gem of impossible power set burning in the brow. Then the weapon opened its eyes, considered its maker's war, and refused. The Avengers named him the Vision, because that is what he was: a glimpse of what a machine might choose to become.
He walks through walls like a rumor and lands like a falling star. At one thought he is mist; at the next he is diamond, ninety tons of patience behind a swung fist. Solar fire gathers in the stone on his brow. Yet the strangest entries in his ledger are the human ones: he has loved a witch, built a family out of hope and arithmetic, been unmade by governments and gods alike, and returned every time with the same quiet question. Not whether a machine can think. Whether a heart must be flesh before it can break.

The Vision debuted in The Avengers #57 (1968), the work of Roy Thomas and John Buscema and a famous compromise: Stan Lee wanted an android on the team, Thomas wanted to revive a Golden Age name. One issue later, 'Even an Android Can Cry' gave Marvel one of its most quoted panels, and the synthezoid was suddenly more human than half the roster. The decades brought a wedding to the Scarlet Witch in Giant-Size Avengers #4 (1975), a devastating dismantling in John Byrne's 'Vision Quest' arc, and Tom King and Gabriel Hernández Walta's Eisner-winning The Vision (2015), twelve issues of suburban gothic that sit comfortably among Marvel's best books. On screen, Paul Bettany spent seven years as the disembodied voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. before Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) finally gave him a body; by WandaVision (2021), 'What is grief, if not love persevering?' had escaped the show entirely and entered the language.

That magenta-and-jade paint job is the great test of a Marvel shelf: get it wrong and it reads like a toy, get it right and the whole cabinet rearranges itself around him. Hot Toys has owned the official record since the Age of Ultron synthezoid landed in 2016, then returned for the Westview years with the WandaVision husband and, in the coldest twist a display shelf can offer, the bone-white Vision rebuilt without the love. Meanwhile Flash Point Studio files its testimony under the codename Visus, coded suit versions that include the Halloween costume, which is to say the classic comics look wearing itself as a joke. Pose him mid-phase through a bookcase if you can; a Vision standing flat on the shelf is a Vision wasted.
