138 combat missions. That's how many I've flown, Tony. Every one of them could've been my last, but I flew 'em.

THE LEGEND

Colonel James Rhodes flew 138 combat missions before he ever put on a suit, and it shows. Where Tony Stark treats armor like a canvas, Rhodey treats it like an aircraft: pre-flight checks, rules of engagement, and enough ordnance on the shoulders to make subtlety somebody else's problem. War Machine is what happens when the world's most advanced weapon is issued to the one man disciplined enough to deserve it. He is also the friendship that held the Avengers' story together: the officer who stole a suit to save his best friend from himself, took a catastrophic fall at Leipzig and walked again on braces Stark built, and stood at the end holding the line. Tony was the genius. Rhodey was the spine.

OFF THE PAGE

Rhodes debuted in the comics in 1979 and made history in 1983 by taking over as Iron Man himself, one of Marvel's first Black legacy heroes. On film he carries a famous asterisk: Terrence Howard originated him, Don Cheadle replaced him, and the recast was waved through with a single wink of a line ("It's me, I'm here, deal with it"). Cheadle then quietly became one of the MCU's longest-serving players, from 2010 to the Armor Wars horizon. War Machine is the franchise's dependable constant: never the headline, always on the manifest.

IN SIXTH SCALE

War Machine is the gunmetal counterweight on any armor shelf, and Hot Toys has tracked every mark of him through the Marvel films, many in diecast, where the weight makes the suit feel like ordnance. The shoulder minigun is the signature; the satisfying part is how the grays and gunmetals set off an Iron Man's hot-rod red beside him. Collectors rarely stop at one of the pair. The full deployment record is below, newest first.

THE SCOUTING REPORT

The Archivist's estimates, scribbled between shelf dustings. Not canon, not law, and absolutely worth arguing about in the Courtyard.
