FROM THE KEEP · FRIDAY 6 NOVEMBER
“Not all those who wander are lost.”
— J.R.R. TOLKIEN, THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
You see, the Keep has a problem with maps. Every time a room is finished, another corridor becomes visible. The corridor leads to a staircase, the staircase to a door, and behind that door is something nobody remembers putting on the plans. Long before the first stone of the Keep was laid, there was a simple thought, carried around for years: the things on our shelves matter. Every figure began somewhere in somebody's imagination. In a story told on a screen, in a book, in a game, or in a world someone dreamed up when the real one wasn't quite enough. Artists and makers gave those stories form, until one day a small piece of an impossible world could stand on an ordinary shelf. Articulated, naturally. We have standards. And so we began keeping records. Then collections needed homes. The homes needed rooms. The rooms needed people, and those people brought photographs, stories, questions, discoveries, and ideas of their own. And the Keep grew. There is still scaffolding everywhere. Some wings have no roofs. Some doors have no keys. From the Beacon, there are stretches of the grounds nobody has properly mapped, though new lights appear in the distance almost every evening. Strangely, the more we build, the more there seems to be. But there are residents here now. Real people, carrying their own little pieces of imaginary worlds. Some have already found things they never knew they were looking for. We hope many more will. Perhaps one day, long after the ladders have been taken down, someone will wonder how all of this came to be. We hope they'll find these pages. The first stones. The wrong turns. The unexpected discoveries. The people who arrived as strangers and became familiar names. Some journeys are worth taking the long way around. 📜 “Journey before destination.” — THE WAY OF KINGS “Catalog every second that matters.” — THE WAY OF THE ARCHIVIST
