THE LEGEND
Dante is the son of Sparda, the demon knight who turned against his own kind to protect humanity, and of Eva, a human woman. Demons killed his mother when he was a boy and took his twin brother Vergil from him, and Dante grew up with half a demon's power and a deep dislike of demons in general. He became a demon hunter for hire, running an office called Devil May Cry, a name he took from something his ally Lady said.
He fights in a long red coat with the great sword Rebellion and a pair of custom pistols named Ebony and Ivory, and he talks the whole time. Bills go unpaid, pizza boxes pile up, and every apocalypse is greeted with a joke. Beneath the swagger is a man who keeps facing the same enemies, his father's old foes and his own brother, and keeps choosing the human side. Vergil chose power instead. Their rivalry runs through Dante's whole life.
OFF THE PAGE
Dante was created by Hideki Kamiya for Capcom's Devil May Cry, released in 2001. The game began life as a Resident Evil project before turning into something faster and stranger. Kamiya took the name from the poet Dante Alighieri and based the personality on the swaggering hero of the manga Cobra. The result was a stylish, cocky action hero whose combat system rewarded showing off, and the series grew from there through Devil May Cry 3, 4 and 5.
Reuben Langdon has voiced Dante in English and performed his motion capture since 2005, and Toshiyuki Morikawa voices him in Japanese. Dante has crossed into Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, among other games. The 2013 reboot DmC gave him a redesign that most fans disliked, and the return of the classic white-haired Dante in Devil May Cry 5 was welcomed. Critics regularly list him among the greatest video game characters.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Dante's sixth scale story belongs to Asmus Toys, which has made him under licence from Capcom across several games. Its early Devil May Cry 4 figure gave him a wired leather red coat so the tails could be posed mid-swing, with Rebellion and Ebony and Ivory. Later releases moved to Asmus's own ADAM body and covered the younger Dante of Devil May Cry 3, with smirking and action head sculpts and weapons such as the Kalina Ann, and the older Dante of Devil May Cry 5, whose luxury edition added extra weapons and V's familiars.
Asmus has built a whole Devil May Cry cast around him, including Vergil, Nero and Lady, so collectors can stage the family feud properly. The things they look for are the coat, which has to flare and hang like leather, the white hair, the cocky grin and the weapon load, since Dante rarely carries fewer than three. Picking a favourite era usually comes down to which game you played first.
