THE LEGEND
Vergil is the elder twin son of Sparda, the demon knight who turned against the demon world to protect humanity. His brother Dante grew up loud and easy. Vergil grew up cold, quiet and fixed on one idea: power, enough of it that he would never be helpless again. He carries his father's katana, Yamato, a blade that can cut through space itself, and wears a long blue coat.
His hunger for Sparda's power set him against Dante at the top of the demon tower Temen-ni-gru, and when he lost, he let himself fall into the demon world rather than take his brother's hand. There he was defeated by the demon emperor Mundus, who remade him as the dark knight Nelo Angelo and sent him against his own twin. Years later he returned and split himself in two to cast off his human weakness, and the halves became the demon Urizen and the frail poet V. Made whole again, he met the son he never knew, Nero, and went back into the demon world beside Dante.
OFF THE PAGE
Vergil comes from Capcom's Devil May Cry series. He first appeared in the original game in 2001, although players met him only as Nelo Angelo, an armoured boss whose name is a misspelling of the Italian for black angel. Devil May Cry 3 in 2005 rebuilt him as a living young man and the prequel's great rival, and its Special Edition made him playable. He was playable again in Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, and took a central role in Devil May Cry 5 in 2019. Ninja Theory's 2013 reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry, recast him as a rebel leader and the final boss.
Daniel Southworth voices him in the main series, and Robbie Daymond took the part for the Netflix animated series. Critics single out his boss fights and his rivalry with Dante: Vergil's calm, formal menace set against his brother's swagger is the engine of the series. He is the opposite number every Dante needs, which is why collectors so rarely buy one twin without the other.
IN SIXTH SCALE
In sixth scale Vergil belongs to Asmus Toys, the maker behind a long run of Devil May Cry figures. Its first Vergil was the Devil May Cry 3 version on the KP01A+ body, about 29.5 cm tall, in a wired leather coat that holds a sweeping pose, armed with Yamato and the Force Edge. A Luxury Edition added a light-up staircase base and armour pieces for the shoulders, forearms and calves. Asmus returned for Devil May Cry 5 with an older, broader Vergil on its ADAM+ bulk body, in the navy coat with a metallic Yamato and scabbard, plus a luxury version that adds the Mirage Edge sword.
Collectors usually buy him as half of a pair. Asmus has made Dante from both games as well, and a Vergil at the right height beside his brother is the whole point. After that, the coat decides it: it has to flare and hang like the game model, and the swept-back white hair has to stay sharp. Fans of the fifth game can complete the family with Asmus's Nero.
