THE LEGEND

Nobody is Ghostface, and that is the point. It is a costume anyone could buy: a white mask with a long, drooping scream for a face, a black hooded robe with tattered sleeves, gloves and a hunting knife. In the town of Woodsboro it became the face of a killing spree, and it has come back again and again since, worn by different people with different reasons, all of them hiding behind the same blank howl. It always starts with a phone call. The voice on the line is friendly at first, then playful, then cruel, and the questions are about horror films: who the killer was, what the rules are, what you would do if you were trapped in one. Get the answer wrong and the knife comes next. Ghostface knows the genre's clichés better than any victim and enjoys turning them into traps. Every time the mask comes off, the face underneath is a surprise, and the only safe assumption is that it could belong to anyone.

OFF THE PAGE

Ghostface was created by Kevin Williamson, who wrote Scream, and brought to the screen by Wes Craven, who directed it in 1996. The film's trick was a killer who had seen the same horror movies as the audience, and its opening scene, with a taunting phone call and a trivia quiz that turns deadly, set the tone for everything after it. Roger L. Jackson voices Ghostface on the phone, whoever is under the mask, because every killer uses the same voice changer. The mask was not designed for the film. Fun World made it in the early 1990s for its Fantastic Faces novelty line, producer Marianne Maddalena found it while scouting locations, and the company named it Ghost Face before the film opened. The knife was modelled on the Buck 120 hunting knife. Scream grew into a long-running series with a new killer in nearly every film, while the costume became one of the most worn and most sold Halloween costumes in the United States, and one of the most parodied.

IN SIXTH SCALE

Sideshow made the licensed Ghostface in sixth scale, opening pre-orders in October 2020. It dresses the figure in a tailored fabric version of the tattered black robe, with a hood and a belt, over an articulated body, and includes sculpted gloves, seven hands and two knives, one clean and one bloodied. The mask is sculpted onto the head, which keeps that famous scream perfectly in shape. SuperMad Toys took a different route with an unlicensed tribute sold as 'Scream Face'. Its cape is wired so the robe can be posed mid-lunge, and it comes with gloved hands, a dagger and a walkie-talkie standing in for the phone calls. Robes are the hard part at 1/6 scale, because fabric does not drape the way it does at full size, and collectors pay close attention to how the hood frames the mask and how the sleeves hang. Ghostface sits naturally on the Scream shelf and in any Horror line-up beside Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger.
