THE LEGEND
Grogu was raised at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant during the Clone Wars, a youngling of the same small, green-eared species as Master Yoda. When the Jedi were purged, someone got him out and hid him, and for years he survived by keeping his powers to himself. By the time a client with ties to the old Empire put a price on him, he was fifty years old and still a child, and the bounty said he had to be brought in alive.
The Mandalorian who found him did hand him over, collected his beskar, and then went back and broke him out. What followed was a long run across the galaxy, with the child slowly learning to reach out through the Force again. Ahsoka Tano learned his name and sent them toward Tython. Luke Skywalker trained him, and offered him a choice between Yoda's lightsaber and a shirt of beskar mail. He chose the mail. In the end he was adopted as the Mandalorian's son and apprentice, and named Din Grogu.
OFF THE PAGE
Grogu appeared in the very first episode of The Mandalorian in 2019, known only as the Child, and became a phenomenon almost overnight. Fans named him Baby Yoda, and Jon Favreau embraced the nickname as the easiest way to identify a character whose real name was not revealed until Chapter 13, "The Jedi", in the second season.
Favreau conceived the character to explore the mystery of Yoda's species. Dave Filoni sketched early versions on cocktail napkins, Christian Alzmann's concept art fixed the final look, and Legacy Effects built the puppet that performed on set. His voice and sounds came from David Acord and Matthew Wood at Skywalker Sound. The Guardian called him 2019's biggest new character.
He has since appeared across The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and the film The Mandalorian and Grogu, released in May 2026. For a character who never says a word, he has carried a remarkable share of modern Star Wars.
IN SIXTH SCALE
At sixth scale Grogu stands only a few centimetres tall, so he almost always arrives as a companion. Hot Toys set the pattern in 2020 with its first The Mandalorian and the Child set, where a hand-painted Child about 6cm tall stood beside the bounty hunter with his necklace. The pairing has returned again and again as the Mandalorian's armour changed, and Hot Toys also packed Grogu with Ahsoka Tano for his meeting with her. For the film The Mandalorian and Grogu, Hot Toys sculpted him anew with a magnet in the body so he can ride on the Mandalorian's left shoulder.
Hot Toys has also released him on his own, so collectors can give him a spot of his own, and Alpha Toys has made a Grogu as well.
Collectors tend to judge a Grogu by the face. The eyes and ears carry the whole expression, and at this size the paint has very little room for error. Most display him with the Mandalorian, with Luke Skywalker or with Yoda across the wider Star Wars shelf.
