Brazil manufactures forwards the way other countries manufacture cars, and Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior arrived as the flagship model: the heir to the yellow number 10, announced at Santos, Pelé's own club, with a highlight reel that looked like a juggling act committed at match speed. Barcelona bought him to complete a front line with Messi and Suárez that terrorized Europe; Paris then paid the largest transfer fee in the history of the sport, a world record that still stands, to build a team around him.
The résumé holds an Olympic gold Brazil had never won, a Champions League, league titles in three countries and his nation's all-time goalscoring record, taken from Pelé himself. But Neymar's true position was never striker or winger. It was entertainer. The rainbow flicks, the no-look passes, the outrageous nerve of it: he played every match as if a child in the crowd had dared him to, because one usually had. The motto is the whole biography: daring and joy.

Neymar is football's great argument about what the game is for. To his critics, the theatrics and the transfer sagas; to everyone else, the last of the street footballers at the summit, proof the sport can still look like play. The 222 million euro move to Paris in 2017 reset the economics of football overnight: every valuation since lives in its shadow, and the fee has become a unit of measurement in its own right.
