Why isn't anyone ever just whelmed?
Dick Grayson, Young Justice (2010)

THE LEGEND

He was born on a trapeze, more or less: the youngest of the Flying Graysons, the circus family that worked without a net. When sabotaged ropes took his parents mid-air, the boy who watched from the platform was taken in by Gotham's strangest bachelor, and the world eventually met him as Robin, the laughing shadow that proved the Bat human. But sidekicks grow, and this one outgrew the very idea. He took a new name from an old Kryptonian legend of a hero who rose after banishment, and Nightwing left Gotham to guard Blüdhaven, a city with all of Gotham's rot and none of its glamour. Twin escrima sticks, an acrobat's contempt for gravity, and the one gift the cowl never had: people follow him because they want to. Every masked generation since has an easier road because the first kid in the game turned out this well.

OFF THE PAGE

Dick Grayson invented an entire genre of character: his 1940 debut in Detective Comics #38 made him the first kid sidekick in superhero comics, and Robin doubled Batman's sales almost overnight. The bolder move came in 1984, when Marv Wolfman and George Pérez let him actually grow up, graduating him to Nightwing in the pages of The New Teen Titans, a legacy promotion comics had never really attempted before. Since then he has led the Titans, worn the cowl itself when Bruce fell, survived a legendary 90s mullet, and become shorthand for the sidekick done right. Screen versions run from Burt Ward's golden-age Robin through Batman Forever to the Titans series and animation's beloved Young Justice take. DC polls keep confirming the open secret: the best-liked man in the universe is the one who started as the kid in the pixie boots.

IN SIXTH SCALE

Nightwing's sixth-scale story splits between the licensed and the coded: Hot Toys covers the cinematic end, while SooSooToys has made a specialty of the blue-crest vigilante in its coded catalog. Collectors judge a Nightwing by motion: the suit is simple, so everything rides on an articulation-friendly body that can actually hit the acrobatic poses, and on escrima sticks that hold in dynamic grips. He is the natural bridge piece of a DC shelf, connecting a Batman display to the wider hero line, and the rare figure that looks wrong standing still.

THE SCOUTING REPORT

The Archivist's estimates, scribbled between shelf dustings. Not canon, not law, and absolutely worth arguing about in the Courtyard.
