THE LEGEND

Spock is the son of Sarek, a Vulcan diplomat, and Amanda Grayson, a human woman, and for most of his life he has belonged fully to neither world. On Vulcan his human side made him a target as a child. In Starfleet he chose the Vulcan path of logic and control, and served as science officer and then first officer of the USS Enterprise under James T. Kirk, alongside the ship's doctor, Leonard McCoy. The three of them were the heart of the ship. Spock's mind meld let him reach the thoughts of others, even a creature as alien as the Horta. In a mirror universe he met a bearded, ruthless version of himself serving a Terran Empire. Facing death aboard the Enterprise, he gave his life to save the ship, placing his katra in McCoy, and was restored to life through the Genesis effect. Later, as a Federation ambassador, he worked to reunite the Romulans with their Vulcan cousins.

OFF THE PAGE

Spock was created by Gene Roddenberry and first appeared in "The Man Trap", which aired on 6 September 1966 as the opening episode of Star Trek. Leonard Nimoy played him from 1966 to 2013 across the original series, the animated series, eight films and The Next Generation, and earned three Emmy nominations. The Vulcan salute was Nimoy's own idea, created while filming "Amok Time" and based on a Jewish blessing gesture he had seen as a child. He wrote two autobiographies about life with the character, I Am Not Spock (1975) and I Am Spock (1995). The role has since passed on. Zachary Quinto played an alternate timeline Spock in Star Trek (2009), Into Darkness and Beyond, with Nimoy appearing alongside him. From 2019 Ethan Peck played a younger Spock in Discovery and then Strange New Worlds. Between Nimoy's half century in the role and two successors, Spock offers collectors more distinct eras than almost any other Star Trek character.

IN SIXTH SCALE

Spock in 1/6 scale belongs to EXO-6, the maker that builds twelve-inch figures for the Star Trek universe. Its first Original Series release, for the franchise's 55th anniversary, was the Mirror Universe Spock from the 1967 episode "Mirror, Mirror": goatee, Terran Empire uniform with magnets for his phaser and dagger, nine interchangeable hands, an agonizer and a transporter pad base. EXO-6 has since covered Spock across the eras. There is the Original Series science officer, the film-era Spock of Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan, Zachary Quinto's Spock from Star Trek Beyond, and Ethan Peck's Lieutenant Spock from Strange New Worlds, issued with a tricorder, communicator, phaser and phaser rifle as part of a full Enterprise crew under Captain Pike. Collectors judge a Spock on the head sculpt above all. The ears, the eyebrows and the stillness of the expression have to be right, and with three actors to match each figure has to look like a specific man in a specific year. Most shelve him beside James T. Kirk and Leonard McCoy on the bridge.
