Somewhere out there is a blue box that is bigger on the inside, and inside it is the last of the Time Lords of Gallifrey. The Doctor stole that box, a Type 40 TARDIS, a very long time ago, and has been late for everything ever since: nine hundred years and counting of arriving just in time, usually in the wrong century, always exactly where needed. When one body wears out, the Doctor regenerates into a new one. New face, new manner, new taste in outerwear. Same person. Same promise.
Because that is the secret hiding in plain sight: Doctor is not a name, it is a vow. Never cruel, never cowardly. Never give up, never give in. The universe is full of armies and empires that learned the hard way what happens when a being with all of time in their pocket decides that one ordinary person is worth saving. The Doctor does not carry a gun. The Doctor carries a screwdriver, and the difference is the whole point.

Doctor Who premiered on the BBC on 23 November 1963, the day after the Kennedy assassination, and nearly vanished into the noise. It did not, and then it did something genuinely immortal: when William Hartnell became too ill to continue in 1966, the production invented regeneration, letting a new actor inherit the role in-story. That single idea made the show unkillable. Tom Baker's scarf conquered the seventies, the 2005 revival with Christopher Eccleston and then David Tennant conquered a new century, and Matt Smith's bow tie conquered the internet.
Sixty years on, Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction series on television and a British institution somewhere between Sherlock Holmes and the weather. Every generation gets its own Doctor and argues for it forever. The show's real superpower was never the TARDIS: it is the ability to become someone new and stay itself.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Sixth-scale Who is a story of two licence holders and one devoted island. Big Chief Studios carried the licence through the 2010s, building tailored Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors, and when the studio went quiet much of its catalogue survived only in archives and collections; several of its Doctors on this page were recovered records. The mantle has since passed to Master Replicas, who are carrying Doctor Who at 1/6 forward, sonic screwdrivers and all.
Collecting the Doctor is unlike collecting anyone else: the character comes in incarnations, so a complete shelf is a regeneration cycle in fabric. And in one delightful filing quirk, this page also holds a different Doctor entirely: Star Trek Voyager's holographic medic shares the mantle, and the Archive lets him. The waiting room is big enough for both.
