THE LEGEND
Albert Wesker was raised by Umbrella, though he did not learn the full truth of that for years. He grew up to become one of the corporation's researchers and later the captain of S.T.A.R.S., the special tactics unit of the Raccoon City police, a calm officer in black sunglasses who seemed to have everything under control. He did. When his team was sent into the Arklay Mountains in 1998, Wesker led them to the mansion laboratory on purpose, to see how Umbrella's bioweapons performed against trained soldiers. The Tyrant he released ran him through.
He got up again. An experimental virus he had taken in advance brought him back faster, stronger and colder than before, and he spent the following decade working against Umbrella and everyone who had survived it, above all Chris Redfield. His final plan was to infect the world with the Uroboros virus and rule whatever was left. It ended in an active volcano in Africa, where Chris and Sheva Alomar finished him.
OFF THE PAGE
Wesker was created by Shinji Mikami and Isao Ohishi for Capcom's original Resident Evil in 1996. Writer Kenichi Iwao reworked him from a cyborg police officer into a cold, egotistical former soldier, and Jun Takeuchi gave him the black sunglasses that became his signature. The first game appeared to kill him. Resident Evil Code: Veronica brought him back in 2000 with superhuman speed and strength, and he grew into the series' great antagonist, the final boss of Resident Evil 5 in 2009.
He has been voiced in English by Pablo Kuntz, Richard Waugh and D. C. Douglas, and in Japanese by Joji Nakata since the start. On film he has been played by Jason O'Mara, Shawn Roberts, Tom Hopper and Lance Reddick, among others. He crossed over into Marvel vs. Capcom, and in 2013 Guinness World Records named him among the greatest video game villains. Critics still split on whether he is a brilliant villain or a gloriously shallow one, and fans are happy to argue it either way.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Hot Toys brought Wesker to twelve-inch scale in its Video Game Masterpiece line around the time of Resident Evil 5, in two looks. The Midnight Version wears his long black coat and comes with an armoury of handguns and shotguns, a knife and those sunglasses, with battery-lit red eyes to show what is behind them. The S.T.A.R.S. Version returns him to the police uniform of the first game. Both are long gone from shelves and turn up mostly on the secondary market.
Much later Present Toys made him again as a coded figure called Schemer, with two head sculpts, silver and black pistols, a submachine gun and a double barrel shotgun. Whatever the maker, collectors judge a Wesker on three things: the sneer, the slicked-back blond hair, and the fit of a coat that has to move with a man who fights like a blur. He anchors any Resident Evil display, ideally facing Chris Redfield, with Jill Valentine and HUNK close by.
