THE LEGEND
He is a codename and a gas mask, and that is all most people ever learn. HUNK works for the Umbrella Security Service, the corporation's private special forces, and his job is to retrieve what Umbrella wants back and erase what it wants forgotten. In September 1998 he led the team sent into the underground laboratory beneath Raccoon City to take the G-virus from William Birkin. Birkin injected himself, turned, and tore the squad apart. HUNK walked out with the sample.
Getting it out of the city was the hard part. He fought his way up from the sewers, through a police station full of the dead, to a helicopter on the roof. That pattern repeats across his file: the unit goes in, the unit dies, and one operator comes home. His colleagues call him the Grim Reaper, and the official record calls him Mr. Death. He has never seemed to mind either name.
OFF THE PAGE
HUNK arrived as a secret. Capcom's Resident Evil 2, released in 1998, hid a bonus mode called The 4th Survivor that players unlocked only after finishing the main scenarios with high ranks. It put them in the boots of an Umbrella commando with a fixed loadout, no saves and one job: get from the sewers to the rooftop helipad. He also turns up briefly in the main game, as the soldier who survives Birkin's attack on the lab.
An epilogue in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis gave him the nickname Mr. Death, and from there he became the series' favourite bonus character. He appears in the Mercenaries modes of Resident Evil 4, The Mercenaries 3D and both Revelations games, in The Umbrella Chronicles and Operation Raccoon City, and The 4th Survivor returned in the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2. Almost no story, a faceless mask and a perfect survival record have made him a cult figure among fans.
