THE LEGEND
He keeps the threshold between the living and the dead. In the oldest days he was Lord of the Dead outright, the god the Egyptians called Inpu, painted black: the colour of the Nile's fertile soil and of the body after death, and so a promise of rebirth. Wild dogs and jackals dug at the desert graves, and a jackal god was set to guard them. His titles say the rest: He Who Is Upon His Sacred Mountain, Lord of the Sacred Land, First of the Westerners.
When Osiris was murdered, it was Anubis who prepared and wrapped his body, which made him the patron of every embalmer who came after. As the cult of Osiris grew, he gave up the throne of the underworld and took a working role at its side. He guides the newly dead into the Hall of Truth and stands by the great scale, where the heart is weighed against the feather of Ma'at. A heart heavy with wrongdoing is lost. A light one walks on.
OFF THE PAGE
Anubis is one of the oldest faces in Egyptian religion. His image appears on royal tombs of the First Dynasty, some five thousand years ago, and his main cult centre was the city the Greeks called Cynopolis, the city of the dog. Priests sometimes wore wooden jackal masks in his rites. The Greeks matched him with Hermes, the guide of souls, and the name Anubis itself is the Greek form of the Egyptian Inpu.
The best known image of him is the gilded black jackal that Howard Carter's team found guarding the Treasury of Tutankhamun's tomb, lying on a shrine at the doorway and facing west, toward the land of the dead. Modern pop culture has kept him busy. The Mummy Returns (2001) sent an army of jackal-headed warriors across the sand, Stargate SG-1 turned him into one of its most dangerous villains, and he turns up in games from Assassin's Creed Origins to SMITE. Through all of it the silhouette holds: black jackal head, gold collar, a man's body standing guard.
IN SIXTH SCALE
In sixth scale Anubis belongs to TBLeague, whose seamless bodies, a metal skeleton sealed inside a silicone skin, suit a god who is mostly bare arms and torso. Their first Anubis, Guardian of the Underworld, arrived in 2019 on the male seamless body with two head sculpts, and a silver edition followed in 2021. In 2025 TBLeague came back with The Last Judgment in gold and silver versions: a canine head with light-up eyes, nemes headdress, usekh collar and shendyt, a canopic jar, and an adjustable Scale of Justice with a heart and two Feathers of Truth, so the weighing of the heart can be staged on its stepped base.
TBLeague has built a whole pantheon around him, so he shares a shelf naturally with Horus, Osiris, Ra, Isis, Bastet and Set. Collectors judge these figures on paint and metalwork as much as sculpt: the gold has to read as gold under shelf lights, and the jackal head has to look alert and dignified. The wider Myths & Legends shelf gathers gods and monsters from other pantheons.
