THE LEGEND

Aragorn, son of Arathorn, is the heir of Isildur and the last of an old royal line, though for most of his life he went by other names. Raised in Rivendell by Elrond, who kept his ancestry secret until he was grown, he lived as a Ranger of the North, known in Bree simply as Strider, guarding lands whose people never knew they were guarded. He gave his heart to Elrond's daughter Arwen, and Elrond set a hard price: she would marry no less than the king of both Gondor and Arnor. The War of the Ring made him that king. He guided the hobbits from Bree, led the Fellowship after Gandalf fell in Moria, fought at Helm's Deep and on the Pelennor Fields, and carried Anduril, the broken sword of Elendil reforged. At the Black Gate he led the last march that drew the Dark Lord's eye away from Frodo. Crowned King Elessar, he married Arwen and ruled for a hundred and twenty-two years, dying at the age of two hundred and ten.

OFF THE PAGE

Aragorn comes from J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, published in 1954 and 1955. He took a long time to arrive: Tolkien first wrote him as a hobbit called Trotter and changed his identity and name many times before settling on the Ranger who would be king. Critics have compared him to King Alfred and Oswald of Northumbria, read him as a Christ-like returning king, and held him up as the model of a romantic hero. On screen he was voiced by John Hurt in Ralph Bakshi's animated film of 1978 and by Theodore Bikel in the Rankin/Bass version of 1980. The performance that fixed him for most people came in Peter Jackson's trilogy, from 2001 to 2003, where Viggo Mortensen replaced the originally cast Stuart Townsend after filming had already begun. Mortensen threw himself into the part. When Aragorn kicks an orc helmet in The Two Towers and cries out, the pain is real: Mortensen broke his toes on the take that made the film.

IN SIXTH SCALE

Asmus Toys holds a licence for 1/6 figures from The Lord of the Rings and made Viggo Mortensen's Aragorn at Helm's Deep, in battle-worn armour with a sword, an elven dagger and the Evenstar pendant, on its ADAM body. An exclusive edition added more accessories, and a slim version followed. InArt, the collectible brand of Queen Studios, made him as he looks in The Fellowship of the Ring, in standard and premium editions: the standard with sculpted hair, the premium with rooted hair, the shards of Narsil and blood-stained hands. That choice sums up the Middle-earth shelf. Some collectors want the Ranger in his weathered coat, others the warrior of Helm's Deep, and rooted or sculpted hair divides opinion as much as the likeness does. Mortensen's face is the test either way. Aragorn rarely stands alone: Asmus and InArt have both made Legolas and Gandalf, and Boromir, Arwen and Frodo complete the Fellowship scenes on the wider The Lord of the Rings shelf.
