THE LEGEND

They still talk about the night Ryker's Island went quiet. Cletus Kasady was a monster long before the monster found him, a red-haired killer with a graveyard's worth of confessions and no remorse to spare. Then one night his cellmate broke out wearing a living black skin, and something small and scarlet stayed behind. It slipped in through an open wound and went looking for a soul. It found appetite instead. What walked out of that cell was not a man in a suit; the suit was in the man, threaded through his blood, grinning out through his teeth. Its parent, Venom, keeps a code. Carnage keeps only one commandment: chaos. Stronger than Venom and the web-slinger combined, it births axes and blades from its own flesh, rides ahead of a storm of tendrils, and laughs at mercy like a joke only it understands. Sound hurts it. Fire frightens it. Nothing else in this world does. The name scrawled on the wall is the whole philosophy, written in red for anyone slow enough to ask: Carnage rules.

OFF THE PAGE

Carnage arrived in The Amazing Spider-Man #361 (1992), a year after writer David Michelinie and artist Erik Larsen had planted Cletus Kasady in Eddie Brock's prison cell. With Venom drifting into antihero territory, Michelinie wanted a symbiote with nothing redeemable in it, and Mark Bagley drew the result as a flayed, dripping nightmare; the character was nearly called Chaos, then Ravage, before Carnage stuck. The fourteen-part Maximum Carnage crossover (1993) became the poster child for nineties excess and a beloved brawler on a blood-red Super Nintendo cartridge. Warren Ellis gave him a chilling psychological turn in Mind Bomb (1996), and Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman rebuilt him into a symbiote god-killer in Absolute Carnage (2019). On screen, Woody Harrelson's Cletus stalked the credits of Venom (2018) before headlining Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021). Three decades on, he remains Marvel's purest argument that some monsters simply do not want anything.

IN SIXTH SCALE

Carnage is the sixth-scale sculptor's final exam. There is no costume to tailor, no face to likeness-match, just a body mid-eruption, all wet red muscle and screaming tendrils. Medicom Toy took the first swing back in 2005, wrestling the symbiote onto a poseable body when most makers would not touch him. The movie era belonged to Hot Toys, whose Venom: Let There Be Carnage renditions pile on sculpted tendrils until the figure seems caught mid-transformation, one bad thought away from your other shelves. Mondo joined the feeding frenzy in 2025 with sixth-scale menace of its own. He displays best under a cold light, a few cautious inches from your Spider-Man: proof that Marvel's scariest red is not Deadpool's, and that some grails should probably be kept behind glass.

THE SCOUTING REPORT

The Archivist's estimates, scribbled between shelf dustings. Not canon, not law, and absolutely worth arguing about in the Courtyard.
