THE LEGEND
To Albuquerque, Gustavo Fring is a model citizen: the courteous owner of the Los Pollos Hermanos chicken chain, a generous donor to local causes, a friend of the police. He came north from Chile by way of Mexico, his past deliberately hard to trace. Behind the restaurants and an industrial laundry he runs the most disciplined methamphetamine business in the Southwest, with a hidden superlab beneath the laundry floor.
Years earlier he founded Los Pollos Hermanos with his partner Max, until a cartel boss had Max killed in front of him by the pool. Gus kept smiling, kept working with the cartel and waited, sometimes for decades, to settle accounts. He brought in Walter White as his cook and Mike Ehrmantraut as his enforcer, outmanoeuvred the Salamancas one by one and never raised his voice. In the end it was old Hector Salamanca, in a nursing home with a bell, who took him with him. Gus walked out of the blast and straightened his tie before he fell.
OFF THE PAGE
Gus was created by Vince Gilligan and George Mastras for the second season of Breaking Bad, as a calm, buttoned-down replacement for the volatile Tuco Salamanca. Giancarlo Esposito was offered a smaller role and pushed to make Gus a regular, and he used yoga techniques to find the character's stillness. His name nods to the German footballer Torsten Frings. Gus's death in Face Off, the fourth season finale in 2011, earned an Emmy nomination for its visual effects.
Esposito received three Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series across Breaking Bad and its prequel Better Call Saul, where he returned from 2017 to show Gus building his empire and dealing with Lalo Salamanca. Critics regularly rank Gus among the best villains in television history. His politeness is what makes him frightening: the glasses, the yellow shirt and tie, the patient voice, the boxcutter.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Gus's sixth scale figures come from the coded makers. Present Toys made him first as the Chicken Man, with two head sculpts, his utility knife, two buckets, a fabric suit and display stand, and later returned with a version that brings a food tray of fried chicken, a plastic bucket and two bags of blue. Mars Toys has its own Chicken Man as a two-figure set, a standard Gus paired with a Face Off version in a damaged suit, and has also offered him in the orange hazmat suit he wore in the superlab.
The Face Off version is the one most collectors argue about, since it depends on the paint and sculpt of half a face. For the standard Gus, the test is how well a figure catches Giancarlo Esposito's composure: the rimless glasses, the trimmed beard, a suit that sits neatly on narrow shoulders. He completes a Breaking Bad shelf opposite Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, with Saul Goodman not far away.
