THE LEGEND
He started life as Jimmy McGill and earned his first nickname, Slippin' Jimmy, by taking falls on purpose and collecting on them. When he went straight, more or less, he became a lawyer in Albuquerque, taking elder law cases and criminal defence work while his older brother Chuck, a partner at Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill, watched and disapproved. The feud between the two brothers shaped almost everything that followed.
The name Saul Goodman came later, along with the loud suits and the reputation. He became the lawyer you called when your problem was not strictly legal, and he was very good at it. When it all came apart he vanished into a new life as Gene Takavic, managing a Cinnabon in Omaha, Nebraska. In the end he stood up in court, told the truth about what he had done, and took a sentence of 86 years. The last thing he gave Kim Wexler, the woman he married and lost, was a pair of finger guns across a prison yard.
OFF THE PAGE
Saul Goodman was created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould and first appeared in the Breaking Bad episode 'Better Call Saul', which aired on 26 April 2009. Bob Odenkirk played him, and the name itself is a joke: say it quickly and it becomes 'it's all good, man'. He arrived as a fast-talking crook in a very dark show, the comic relief who knew exactly where the bodies were buried.
He outgrew the role. Better Call Saul ran from 2015 to 2022 as a prequel, following Jimmy McGill's slow slide into the man Breaking Bad viewers already knew, with Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler and Michael McKean as Chuck. It also followed him past the end of Breaking Bad, into his life as Gene, and closed with the episode 'Saul Gone' in August 2022. Few supporting characters have been given that much room. The spin-off turned a punchline into a full tragedy, and it made Odenkirk a leading man in the process.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Saul has reached 1/6 scale both under licence and through smaller makers. ThreeZero made the licensed version for its Breaking Bad line, which also covered Walter White and Jesse Pinkman. Announced in December 2017, it carries a Bob Odenkirk likeness and dresses him in a tailored suit with a red shirt and silk tie, plus an opening briefcase, a gold watch, a laptop, a newspaper and rolls of cash.
The Better Call Saul years arrived later. Ghost Toys sells its figure under the coded name 'Saul Lawyer' and builds a strip-mall practice around him: briefcase, mobile phone, business cards, cash and even a telephone booth. Present Toys went for the loud courtroom suit, with coffee, a newspaper, a phone, stacks of money and a pair of duffel bags.
Collectors judge a sixth scale Saul on two things: whether the face catches Odenkirk's restless, salesman's grin, and whether the suit is loud enough. Most end up displaying him beside Walt and Jesse, which is exactly the company he spent years trying to deny he kept.
