THE LEGEND
Tifa Lockhart grew up in Nibelheim, a mountain town she shared with a quiet boy named Cloud Strife. When her home was destroyed she carried the loss to Midgar and turned it into a cause. She runs 7th Heaven, a bar in the slums, and behind the counter she is a member of AVALANCHE, the group fighting to stop Shinra from draining the planet.
She fights with her fists. Trained in martial arts, she goes into every battle in gloves and boots rather than with a blade, and she hits as hard as anyone in the party. When Cloud turns up in Midgar claiming a past that does not quite fit, she is the one who persuades him to join AVALANCHE, partly to keep him close and watch over him. Years later, after the planet is saved, she is still trying to get him to put down the guilt he insists on carrying, while raising Marlene and Denzel above the bar.
OFF THE PAGE
Tifa Lockhart was created by Tetsuya Nomura for Final Fantasy VII, released by Square in 1997, and designed as a foil to her teammate Aerith Gainsborough. She was the game's martial artist, drawn from the series' monk class, and quickly became one of its best-loved heroines.
Her story has kept growing. The film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005) picked her up two years after the game, running 7th Heaven and caring for Marlene and Denzel. Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and Rebirth (2024) rebuilt her for a new generation, with a redesign by Dan Suzuki and Roberto Ferrari working from Nomura's original. In Japanese she has been voiced by Ayumi Ito. In English, Rachael Leigh Cook voiced her from Advent Children onward, and Britt Baron took over for the Remake series.
Few game characters have been cosplayed, sculpted and redrawn as often, and the Remake gave collectors a fresh, detailed look to work from.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Tifa in 1/6 scale is a story of smaller makers. The big licensed sixth scale houses have left Final Fantasy largely alone, so the twelve-inch Tifa shelf has been filled by independent Chinese studios, some of them selling under alternative product names in the coded way.
Super Duck has returned to her repeatedly, from head sculpts and costume sets for collectors building their own figure to complete versions in her original and Remake looks. War Story and SW Toys both took on her Remake look. Star Man, ACG ART and GameToys have added their own takes on her classic Final Fantasy VII appearance.
Collectors judge a Tifa on the head sculpt first, since a likeness of a game character has to match a drawing rather than an actor, and then on the tailoring of a costume that is mostly fabric. Most display her beside Cloud Strife and the rest of the party, and it is worth checking whether a given release is a full figure or a head and costume set.
