THE LEGEND

Cloud Strife arrives in Midgar as a mercenary with a huge sword on his back and a story about being a former SOLDIER First Class. He takes work with AVALANCHE, the eco-terrorist group fighting Shinra, strictly as a hired sword. The truth is buried much deeper. He grew up in Nibelheim, left to follow his hero Sephiroth into the army, and never made it into SOLDIER at all. He served as an ordinary infantryman. When Sephiroth burned Nibelheim and killed Cloud's mother, everything that came after was built on that loss. Mako exposure and Jenova cells broke his memory, and he stitched a new personality together from Zack Fair, the SOLDIER who befriended him and died getting him out. Even the Buster Sword was Zack's. Cloud's journey is about fighting Sephiroth, but it is also about finding out who he really is, and learning to live with it once he does.

OFF THE PAGE

Cloud Strife was created for Final Fantasy VII, released by Square in 1997, by a team including Yoshinori Kitase, Kazushige Nojima, Hironobu Sakaguchi and Tetsuya Nomura, who designed him. The spiky blond hair and oversized sword became instantly recognisable, and critics have long praised him as one of the most complex characters in games. He is often cited as one of the first unreliable narrators in a role-playing game. Nomura redesigned him for the film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005), giving collectors a second classic look in black. Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) and Rebirth (2024) brought him back in full detail. Takahiro Sakurai has voiced him in Japanese since Kingdom Hearts in 2002. Steve Burton voiced him in English for years, and Cody Christian took over for the Remake series, winning a Golden Joystick Award for Rebirth. Between the original game, the film and the Remake, Cloud has three distinct looks, and the sixth scale shelf has used all of them.

IN SIXTH SCALE

No major licensed sixth scale maker has taken Cloud on, so the twelve-inch Cloud has come from smaller Chinese studios, some of them working in the coded way under alternative product names. VTS Toys was among the first, with versions in his Remake outfit and his black Advent Children look, the latter in a deluxe edition. GameToys followed with its own Cloud in both the original game look and the film look. Super Duck covered the classic Final Fantasy VII design, and Toys Battalion and Toystay have since taken their turns. The Buster Sword is the first test of any Cloud: at this scale it has to be big enough to look right and still sit properly in the figure's hand. The hair is the second, since Cloud's spikes are hard to sculpt without looking like a helmet. After that, collectors look at the tailoring, and at which of his three looks a figure is trying to capture. Most shelve him with Tifa Lockhart, Sephiroth and Zack Fair across the wider Final Fantasy range.
