THE LEGEND
Kara Zor-El is Superman's cousin, and she remembers the home he never knew. She grew up in Argo City, a piece of Krypton that survived the planet's destruction and drifted through space under a covering of lead. When a meteor strike broke that shield, her family sent her to Earth. Under a yellow sun she has the same gifts as her cousin: flight, enormous strength, speed and heat vision.
On Earth she took the name Linda Lee and was raised by the Danvers family, learning to pass as an ordinary girl while she worked out what kind of hero she wanted to be. She has never been content as a smaller copy of the Man of Steel, and she carries the loss of Krypton differently, because for her it was a real place full of people she knew. In the greatest crisis the multiverse ever faced she gave her life to save her cousin and all of reality. Versions of Kara have returned many times since, each one proving that the S on her chest belongs to her too.
OFF THE PAGE
Otto Binder and Al Plastino created Supergirl for Action Comics #252, cover dated May 1959. In 1985 DC killed her off in Crisis on Infinite Earths #7, sacrificing her to save her cousin and the multiverse, and she has been reinvented in many forms since.
On screen, Helen Slater played her first, in the 1984 film Supergirl. Melissa Benoist led the television series Supergirl, which premiered on CBS in October 2015, moved to The CW for its second season and ended after six seasons in November 2021. Sasha Calle played a harder, haunted Kara in The Flash (2023). Then DC Studios built a film around her for its new DC Universe: Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie with Milly Alcock as Kara, released in June 2026. Its Kara is a young woman on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice, a long way from the earnest teenager of 1959.
IN SIXTH SCALE
Supergirl has been made in sixth scale for each of her screen eras. Hot Toys gave Sasha Calle's version from The Flash a newly developed body and a head with rolling eyes, and has also taken on Milly Alcock's Kara from the 2026 film, paired with Krypto. InArt made the Alcock version too, with rooted hair, articulated eyes and a silicone body, plus a trench coat, sunglasses, headphones and a music player, Krypto and Ruthye's sword.
The Melissa Benoist years were covered by coded figures. War Story sold its version as 'Supreme Girl', with rooted hair and a seamless body, and SooSooToys made the CW suit as 'Lady Protector'. For the comics look, Super Duck produced a head and costume kit designed for a seamless female body, a favourite route for collectors who build their own.
Female superhero figures are judged hard on likeness and proportion, and the cape matters as much as the face. She belongs beside Superman on the DC shelf.
