THE LEGEND

He has no single name because he has carried every one. He waded ashore in Normandy with a rifle held over his head, held the line in the snow outside Bastogne, rode a dispatch motorcycle through the hedgerows, and came home to a parade that never quite matched what he had seen. A generation later he was walking point through elephant grass, and a generation after that he was stacking up outside a door with a suppressed carbine and a radio in his ear. The uniform changes and so does the weight on his back. What stays is the detail that tells you exactly who he was: the unit patch, the way the webbing sits, the scuffs on the boots, the one personal item tucked where regulations said it should not be. He is every soldier, which is why each one has to be someone in particular.

OFF THE PAGE

The soldier is where one-sixth scale began. In 1964 Hasbro released G.I. Joe, the first fully articulated action figure, an American serviceman standing about a foot tall. That height became the hobby's yardstick. Britain got its own version in 1966, when Palitoy launched Action Man under licence, starting with an Action Soldier, Sailor and Pilot in Second World War and Korean War dress. The Vietnam years made war toys unpopular with parents. G.I. Joe was turned into an Adventure Team and the twelve-inch line ended in 1976. It came back in the 1990s, this time aimed at adults: Hasbro's Classic Collection reissued the figure for grown-up collectors, and new makers followed with far more realistic uniforms and gear. 21st Century Toys started in 1997, Dragon launched its New Generation 1/6 line in 1999 beginning with Second World War subjects, and BBi built its Elite Force range. (The longer story is in our [history of sixth scale collecting](/guides/history-of-sixth-scale-collecting).) Hot Toys' very first release, in 2000, was not a movie hero at all but a US Navy F-14 Tomcat pilot.

IN SIXTH SCALE

Today 1/6 scale military figures are a world of their own, built on research rather than licences. DamToys leads the modern era with special operations units recreated down to the kit: Navy SEAL teams, Marine Force Recon, Delta operators and Russian airborne troops, each tied to a real unit or operation. Soldier Story works the same territory, from SEAL snipers to Hong Kong's Special Duties Unit. Easy&Simple is known for modern tier-one operators with gear that could pass for the real thing. History has its own specialists. UJINDOU and Alert Line cover WWII and the Cold War, DID has been building WWII soldiers for collectors for years, and VeryCool and Flagset put women soldiers on the shelf, from Soviet snipers to modern operators. Collectors here judge a figure by its accuracy: the right camouflage pattern for the year, the right rifle for the unit, a head sculpt that looks like a person and not a toy. Many treat the boxed figure as a starting point and rebuild it with extra kit, which the hobby calls kitbashing. A soldier arrives with dozens of loose pieces (pouches, magazines, radios, spare hands), so the Vault has a Drawer, chests and a KIT for every figure to keep track of what goes where, and which figure every piece came from. Browse the wider Military and History & Culture shelves for vehicles, officers and the battles themselves.
